Why New Year's Resolutions Are Just Another Form Of Procrastination!

Why New Year's Resolutions Are Just Another Form Of Procrastination!

Years ago I made a new year's resolution to never again make any more new year's resolutions- It's the only new year's resolution I've ever kept!

One of the things that has always bothered me about new year's resolutions is the fact that everyone is waiting for the new year to start a goal. It's like saying, I won't go the the gym until I am fit - it makes no sense! Some people need a date to start something big, and the new year seems like a good time- but the best time is actually now!

It's like the question "when is the best time to plant a shade tree?", the reply is "20 years ago". The next question is "when is the 2nd best time to plant a shade tree" and the reply is always "now".

My point is, why wait for an arbitrary date to start something that you can work towards now?

If you have something that you cannot start any time you like, such as a course that begins on a specific date, you can always do something towards your goals. If you want to learn art but cannot afford classes yet- buy a sketch book and watch YouTube videos on how to do it. If you want to lose weight but cannot afford the gym- start walking (it is the most underrated but most beneficial exercise for us bipedal humans!). If you cannot walk, find something that you can do!

Baby steps turn into big actions eventually- and overnight successes do not happen overnight!

I have known many people that say, "what is the point in saving $1 when it will take me so long to save any money"- my answer is usually  "compound interest", but that is also where I lose people (you can see the eyes start to glaze over ;). The point is, spending that $1 on a chocolate that, let's face it, most of us do not need, instead of putting it in your savings account may make you feel good temporarily but it does nothing towards your goals. If it wasn't worth saving $1 at a time, why would chocolate companies sell chocolate bars for $1?

If you can start anything right now instead of waiting until the next New Year, no matter how small or insignificant you think it may be, do it! Your little actions now can turn into something big in the future. We have all known people that put off things, waiting for an arbitrary date and never get around to doing them. Unfortunately I'm pretty sure that we have also all known people who never got to do the things they wanted to do because they died, sometimes with goals that they wanted to start in the new year.

Do yourself a favour and if there is something you want to start, start it now while you still can!!

As always we would love to hear your thoughts about your goals and resolutions- Do you make them? Do you wait to make them? Leave us a comment in the comments section!
